What Is the Right Size Ski Jacket for My Kid?
A guide for parents of little skiers
Planning your family ski holiday is exciting – especially if it’s your child’s first time on the slopes. But when it comes to kitting them out, things can get a little confusing. One of the most common questions we hear is: “What’s the right size ski jacket for my child?”
Don’t worry – we’ve got you covered.
Why Getting the Right Fit Matters
A ski jacket isn’t just about looking cute in photos (although that’s a bonus!). It’s about warmth, comfort and movement. Too big, and your child will feel bulky and cold. Too small, and they won’t have room to layer up – plus, it could restrict their movement, especially when they’re learning to ski or snowboard.
How to Choose the Right Size Ski Jacket
Here’s what to consider:
1. Start with their current clothing size
Most ski jackets for children are sized by age – for example, age 4-5, 6-7, and so on. A good rule of thumb is to start with your child’s normal clothing size. If they’re currently wearing size 5-6 in high street clothes, that’s your starting point.
But remember – sizing can vary a lot between brands. Always check the brand’s size chart, we have them on every product page, just above the size options.
2. Take key measurements
Age is the same, but size is not. Imagine a class full of 9-year-olds - everyone looks different. That’s why we prefer to focus on size rather than age. The actual body measurements are more important
-
Chest - Under the arms, around the fullest part
-
Waist - Measure your waist at the narrowest point.
-
Height - Measure stood up straight against a wall or door
Compare these with the brand’s size guide and choose the age range that fits the best. Check also if the brand offers an "Extend Size" function, which allows the arms and/or legs to be extended by up to five centimetre by unpicking a seam.
3. Think about layering
Your child will likely wear base layers and a fleece or mid-layer under their ski jacket. So, it’s fine (and often ideal) for the jacket to be slightly roomy – just not swimming in it.
You should be able to fit two fingers between the jacket and their body when it’s zipped up. That gives enough room to layer up without being too baggy.
What About Growth Spurts?
We get it – kids grow fast. You might be tempted to size up so they can “grow into it”. That’s okay within reason.
One size up is usually fine, especially if you’re buying early in the season and they are close top the upper end of the range – a ski jacket that’s too big can get in the way when skiing, making it harder for them to move or stay warm.
Some ski jackets are “grow with me” designs, with sleeves that can extend as your child grows – a great option if you’re planning multiple trips.
Fit Tips from the Slopes
Here’s how you know the ski jacket fits well:
✅ Sleeves come just to the wrist (not dangling past their hands)
✅ They can lift their arms freely without the jacket riding up too much
✅ It zips up easily with all layers underneath
✅ No bunching, gaping, or tight spots
Don’t Forget the Extras
A good fit is essential, but so is function. Look for:
-
Snow skirt (keeps snow out during falls)
-
Adjustable cuffs (to block out cold air)
-
Hood that fits over a helmet (ideal for young beginners)
-
Reflective details (for visibility)
Final Thought
Choosing the right size ski jacket for your child doesn’t need to be a faff. Stick to their current size, allow for layering, and check the brand’s measurements. A well-fitting ski jacket means your child can stay warm, move freely, and enjoy every snowy moment – and that means fewer complaints and more fun for everyone!
