Starting Kids on Skis: A Parent's Guide to Their First Ski Holiday

Planning your first family ski holiday with a toddler? It can feel daunting, but starting young helps children build confidence, balance and a lifelong love of skiing. The key is to keep it fun, relaxed and pressure-free.

When Can Children Start Skiing?

Many ski schools welcome children from around three years old, but younger toddlers can still get used to wearing skis and moving around on them.

At Little Skiers, our toddler skis are designed for little ones who aren't quite ready for lessons. They help children get comfortable standing, shuffling and sliding, making their first experience on snow much more enjoyable.

Remember, the goal isn't perfect skiing—it's building confidence and having fun.

Start Practising Before Your Holiday

One of the easiest ways to prepare your toddler is before you even reach the mountains.

Many Little Skiers customers let their children wear our toddler skis at home in the weeks before their trip. Toddlers can shuffle around the house, slide on suitable indoor flooring, or practise in the garden while getting used to having skis on their feet.

By the time they arrive at the resort, wearing skis already feels familiar, making those first moments on the snow much less intimidating.

Build Excitement Before You Go

Help your toddler know what to expect by:

  • Watching children skiing

  • Reading snow-themed books

  • Playing pretend ski games

  • Talking about the mountains and snow

A little excitement beforehand goes a long way.

Get Them Used to Their Ski Gear

Ski clothing can feel bulky, so let them wear their:

  • Helmet

  • Goggles

  • Gloves

  • Jacket

  • Salopettes

Practising at home helps them feel more comfortable on holiday.

Keep Sessions Short

Toddlers learn best when they're:

  • Well rested

  • Warm

  • Fed

  • Happy

Aim for 20–40 minute sessions, then stop for snacks, hot chocolate or a play in the snow. Don't worry if they spend more time making snowmen than skiing—that's all part of the experience.

Celebrate Every Success

Every little achievement counts:

  • Putting skis on

  • Standing up after a fall

  • Sliding a few metres

  • Wanting another go

Praise and encouragement build confidence far faster than pushing for progress.

Dress for Comfort

Happy skiers stay warm, not overheated.

Dress your toddler in:

  • A moisture-wicking base layer

  • A warm mid layer

  • Waterproof jacket and salopettes

  • Thin ski socks

  • Waterproof mittens

  • A neck warmer

Comfortable children enjoy skiing for much longer.

Make It Fun

A family ski holiday isn't just about skiing.

Mix in:

  • Tobogganing

  • Snowball fights

  • Building snowmen

  • Swimming

  • Hot chocolate breaks

The more fun they have, the more they'll want to come back next year.

Why Start Young?

Introducing skiing early helps children become familiar with snow, ski equipment and mountain environments while developing balance and coordination. Most importantly, it creates happy family memories and gives them a confident start when they're ready for ski school.

Ready for Their First Slide?

Little Skiers' toddler skis are the perfect way to introduce young children to skiing. Whether they're practising around the house before your holiday or taking their first slides on the snow, every shuffle helps build confidence for the adventures ahead.

After all, every great skier starts with a very small slide.
