When it comes to getting children ready for a day on the slopes, keeping their hands warm and dry is a top priority. Cold, wet fingers can quickly turn a brilliant ski day into a miserable one!
If you’ve been looking at Hestra ski gloves for your child, you may have come across two popular technologies: C-Zone and GORE-TEX. But what’s the difference, and which one is right for your little skier?
Here’s our simple guide for parents.
Hestra’s C-Zone technology is designed to provide a waterproof, breathable barrier while maintaining comfort and flexibility.
For children, that combination is particularly useful. Little hands are constantly moving – holding ski poles, building snowmen, picking themselves up after a tumble and, of course, grabbing a snack!
Hestra C-Zone gloves and mittens are designed to keep snow and moisture out while allowing moisture from inside the glove to escape.
A great example is the Hestra Gauntlet CZone Kids Ski Mitten. The longer gauntlet helps stop snow getting inside the cuff, while the mitten design is especially useful for younger children who tend to get cold fingers.
GORE-TEX is perhaps the best-known waterproof, breathable membrane in outdoor clothing and gloves.
In a ski glove, the membrane is designed to prevent water from getting in while allowing moisture vapour to escape. This is particularly useful when children are skiing hard, playing in the snow or spending long days outdoors.
The Hestra GORE-TEX Gauntlet Kids Ski Glove, for example, combines a waterproof, breathable GORE-TEX membrane with warm insulation and a longer cuff that fits over the ski jacket.
The Hestra Atlas is another versatile GORE-TEX option, with warm Fiberfill insulation and a PU-coated palm for grip. It is designed for skiing, outdoor play and everyday winter use.
For most parents, the good news is that both are excellent choices.
The main difference is the technology used to provide the waterproof and breathable barrier. Rather than thinking of one as automatically "better", it’s worth considering how your child skis and what they need from their gloves.
| C-Zone | GORE-TEX | |
|---|---|---|
| Waterproof protection | Excellent | Excellent |
| Breathability | Yes | Yes |
| Great for skiing | ✓ | ✓ |
| Good for snow play | ✓ | ✓ |
| Ideal for younger skiers | ✓ | ✓ |
| Best for | Everyday skiing, play & active kids | Skiing, wet snow & demanding winter conditions |
For younger children and all-round winter use, C-Zone is a fantastic option. Hestra's C-Zone mittens are particularly appealing for little skiers who spend as much time playing in the snow as they do actually skiing!
For children who spend long days skiing or are likely to encounter lots of wet snow, GORE-TEX is an excellent choice. The waterproof, breathable membrane is designed to keep hands dry while allowing excess moisture to escape.
And remember: mittens are often warmer than five-finger gloves because the fingers share their warmth. If your child is prone to cold hands, a good-quality mitten is definitely worth considering.
For children, we think the cuff is almost as important as the membrane.
A long gauntlet that goes over the ski jacket helps stop snow finding its way inside the sleeve. This becomes particularly important when your child is learning to ski and spends plenty of time sitting, falling and playing in the snow!
Hestra's Gauntlet gloves and mittens are designed with longer cuffs for this reason.
If you're shopping for your child's next ski trip, take a look at the Hestra kids' ski gloves and mittens at Little Skiers. We stock a range of Hestra options, including C-Zone and GORE-TEX styles for different ages and skiing needs.
For younger children:
Hestra C-Zone mittens are a great all-round choice.
For cold hands:
Consider a mitten rather than a five-finger glove for extra warmth.
For wet snow and long ski days:
GORE-TEX is a brilliant option for keeping hands dry.
For maximum protection from snow:
Look for a long gauntlet that sits securely over the ski jacket.
Whatever technology you choose, the fit matters enormously. A glove that is too tight can restrict movement and reduce warmth, while one that is too big can make it difficult for your child to grip ski poles.
At Little Skiers, we recommend checking the individual Hestra size guide and measuring your child's hand before ordering, as sizing can vary between brands.
C-Zone or GORE-TEX? There’s no wrong answer. Both offer excellent protection for little hands – the best choice comes down to your child's age, how they ski and whether warmth, versatility or maximum wet-weather protection is your priority.
And if in doubt, warm, dry hands = happy little skier! ⛷️❄️
