Late season skiing? recommended resorts

Late season skiing? recommended resorts

Jan 20, 2017

I’ve researched the internet for the latest recommendations of skiing resorts to consider for late season skiing.  Firstly, I turned to the extremely knowledgeable and useful forum, snowheads.com which suggest:

Ruka in Finland which closes 17th May or head further north to Kittlefjall, Borgafjall, Hemmavan  Further north to Riksgransen or Geilo in Norway.

Val Thorens and Tignes are Alpine resorts that you can count on to have plenty of snow and runs still open in the second half of April.

Åre in Sweden, the high zone ski lifts (Stendalsliften, Tväråvalvsliftarna and Tusenmetersliften stays open till 1st of May

The Telegraph also recommends Val Thorens, France.  Part of the Trois Vallées, it’s Europe’s highest resort at 2,300m, with slopes reaching 3,230m. This means guaranteed good snow over a long season that ends mid-May and the resort suits everyone from beginners through to experts.

Esprit Ski have departures as late as the weekend of the 16th April to the high resorts.  They recommended two that are great for late skiing: Tignes (which has a glacier, and therefore also Val d’Isère as they share the same ski area) in France, and Obergurgl in Austria which is also very high.

weathertoski.co.uk recommends Saas-Fee, Switzerland.  With a resort height of 1800m Saas-Fee is reliable for late season snow, even more reliable at resort level where the nursery slopes are among the most snow-sure in the Alps.  With most of the slopes above 2500m, good skiing conditions is pretty much guaranteed late into the season and is ideal for families with beginner and intermediate skiers.

Please add your personal recommendations to where you’ve been skiing late on in the season!

Happy Skiing!
