My thoughts are turning to Christmas now bonfire night and halloween have been and gone. Lapland trips are proving more and more popular but I have never been (but know my 6 & 8yr old would be very keen!). So I decided to ask some questions (maybe obvious questions) to Mark Bennett from Santa's Lapland - the real experts. They currently have some fantastic offers on and it is not too late to book for this Christmas.
What is the youngest age you would recommend to go on the trip?
5 years, we would not recommend taking children under 5 due to the extreme conditions. We understand it is tempting to take small children to see Santa Claus; however we want everyone to enjoy the experience.
How cold does it get?
The average temperature is -12c and can go as low as -30c
What clothing would you recommend?
In addition to the complimentary thermal outer-suit, woollen socks, snow-boots, outer gloves and hats, all free of charge. I would also recommend you bring mittens or gloves (ideally waterproof ones for children’s snow play) to be worn next to the skin, balaclavas or scarves and hats ideally with flaps or that can be pulled down to cover ears. Several layers are far more insulating, so the best bet is thermal underwear, shirt or roll-neck fleece and a jacket under your outer-suit when outdoors.
What activities would you say are a must and should not be missed out on?
There are a wide range of activities available, with the following included in a Santa’s Lapland 3 or 4 day trip:
Husky Sledding – One of the most exhilarating activities especially for adults who get to drive the sled while the children get to ride on-board
Sleigh Ride – An activity for all the family, experience the gentle sleigh ride glide through the snow, led by reindeer and Sami guide
Toboggan Fun
Mini Skidoo
Snow Hockey
Ice Fishing
The Tobogganing and mini skidoo rides prove to be favourites with the children, along with the Ice hockey being great fun.
Additional Adventures are available and can be fitted in to either a 3 or 4 day trip, these range from a Family Snowmobile Safari to Downhill Skiing. On a 4 day trip we would suggest one morning activity and one afternoon activity for your ‘Adventures Galore’ day and there is also time on your last morning to squeeze one extra adventure in. All of the extra adventures are at an additional cost and we would recommending booking early to get the best possible deal.
How long are the flights?
3 hours 15 minutes
We are especially keen on maximising our chances of see the northern lights, what would you recommend to increase our chances?
You should be able to see the Northern lights every other night on average when in Lapland, they can be seen from early evening as soon as it gets dark. The one thing we cannot predict is the weather and seeing the Northern Lights all depends on a clear night sky.
I imagine it to be expensive, how much would it cost, all in, for a 4 day trip?
Here are the costs of a 4 day trip travelling on the 3rd December and staying at the Hotel Kieppi in a family room, including flights and transfers between the airport and accommodation:
2 Adults £1458
1 Child (5) £ 269
1 Child (6-11) £ 379
Half Board £ 233.40
Total £2339.40
Looking through their very detailed brochure, it does look like a magical long weekend. We are seriously going to contemplate before our children get too old! If any parents out there have any recommendations or tips please share and comment.
